Bishop’s Bound series surrounding corsetry and historical undergarments centers around the fluidity of ideal body expectations. During centuries past, women wore corsets and crinolines to garner a desirable silhouette. Nowadays, the corset has become a fetishized garment worn in private or as an outerwear piece. In her photographs, the subjects are wearing their corset over their everyday clothing in a bedroom setting which is the most private and intimate space. Styling the corset over a t-shirt or everyday garment calls back to when corsets were worn over chemise and were strictly hidden shapewear. The combination of modern clothes and this anachronistic undergarment highlight that particular body standards for women are still persistent in our society, but have been internalized, influenced by social media and persist with the growing popularity of surgical procedures to change the body in order to stay within current ideals.
